Laboratory for Advanced Research in Acoustics

The Laboratory for Advanced Research in Acoustics (LARA) of the Graduate Program in Architectural Acoustics at the School of Architecture, was established in 2010 through the support of Dr. Leo L. Beranek, National Medal of Science winner (2004), IEEE Fellow, founder of Bolt Beranek and Newman (developers of ARPANET), retired Harvard and MIT professor, author of foundational texts on the physics of sound and sound control, and a pioneer & living legend in acoustical science. In 2010, Dr. Beranek donated to RPI portions of his personal library on acoustical science and engineering. This extraordinary gift is the foundation of the Beranek Acoustics Research Laboratory, an international center of excellence for research on architectural acoustics and design. The Laboratory and its affiliated scientists and Ph.D. students focus their expertise, activities and global outreach on the conduct of trans-disciplinary research in the following areas:

  • Technology & materials - Novel methods for characterizing the resilience and sustainability of new and emerging materials
  • Quantitative modeling of complex physical systems & environments using advance statistical methods
  • Verification & testing of standards & guidelines used in planning and designing specialized structures (e.g., hospitals, cockpits, control rooms)
  • Human factors - impacts of noise, sound & vibration on human health and performance

Recent activities include:

  • Research grants from NSF for Telematic music (PI. Jonas Braasch's research project)
  • Presentation of five scientific papers at InterNoise 2011 / Osaka
  • Invited delegate to the national summit on "alarm fatigue" in Washington DC sponsored by US-Food & Drug Administration, The Joint Commission, ECRI Institute, American College of Clinical Engineering, and the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation
