The Communication
Acoustics and
Aural Architecture Research Laboratory, CA3RL,
(pronounced as the given name "Carl")
is hosted in the School of Architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute in Troy, New York. Its mission is to explore human perception
of sound to further increase the knowledge in this field. CA3RL has a focus on
Spatial Hearing, Virtual Acoustic Technology, and related fields. One
of the main
goals is to bring scientists (Communication Acousticians) and artists
(Aural Architects) as equals together for a true interdisciplinary
approach, taking advantage that both groups investigate human
perception with their unique set of tools and benefiting from each
other through critical dialogue. CA3RL's research is divided into three main areas (see diagram for inter-areal relationships): Psychophysics and Auditory Signal Processing Virtual-Environment Technology Aural Architecture A summary of current projects can be found here. ![]() |
